Social life difficulties
Many daydreamers (although not all) state that they are socially awkward. It could be because daydreamers have spent so much time in their fantasy world that they have not developed the appropriate social skills needed to thrive in social settings. Or it could be that they have always found social occasions difficult and use Daydreaming as a substitute.
WHAT CAME FIRST, THE MD OR THE DEPRESSION?
The very nature of Maladaptive Daydreaming is under question. Is it a distinct condition or syndrome, or is it a reaction to other conditions such as depression, ADD, ADHD, OCD, AVPD, anxiety and mood disorders? Is Maladaptive Daydreaming caused by depression etc? Or is depression, OCD, and anxiety disorders the result of having Maladaptive Daydreaming? One explanation for the significant number of MD sufferers having clinically-diagnosed depression, anxiety disorders etc, is that without recognition of MD in the DSM, clinicians have to choose the closest diagnosis. So someone with Maladaptive Daydreaming may be told that they have anxiety and that anxiety is their main problem. That is not to suggest that those diagnosed with depression, OCD and anxiety etc, do not have these conditions, but it is reasonable to wonder whether a sufferer would continue to have symptoms of these other conditions if they were cured of Maladaptive Daydreaming. We await further research findings.
